Nigeria’s economy: A mirror that does not reflect

Consumers are currently facing persistent petrol scarcity, which has worsened traffic congestion and driven up prices. In August, petrol prices spiked to as high as ₦1,000-₦1,500/litre. This led to a subsequent increase in transportation costs, which currently account for 6.44% of total consumer expenditures. Going forward, the rise in transport fares could limit the expected decline in food prices and further stoke inflationary pressures. This comes after a modest decline of 0.79% in Nigeria’s headline inflation to 33.40% in July and an economic growth of 3.19% in Q2’24.

This edition of the Unity Bank Digest provides a comprehensive analysis of these economic trends and engaging lifestyle and entertainment stories for your reading pleasure.
