FDC ECONOMIC BULLETIN – MARCH 15, 2019 (Re: Headline inflation down to 11.31%)

Dear Subscriber,

Contrary to FDC and other analysts’ projection for an increase in inflation, the data released by National Bureau of Statistics today showed a slight decline to 11.31%.

In the last six months, headline inflation has shown a mixed trend declining in three of the months and also increasing for an equal number of months. Food inflation fell by 0.04% especially potatoes, yams and meat. The moderation in inflation was not confined to the food basket. In the non-food category, household appliances and materials also recorded a decline in price.

All eyes will now be on the MPC at their meeting in 10 days to see their reaction. The MPC will be pleased with the fall in inflation which suggests that some of the policies to contain inflation can be considered to be successful.

In the attached bulletin, the FDC Think-Tank analyses the inflation data for February and its impact on economic policy environment.
