Cocoyam is a unique root and tuber crop because of its high nutritional benefits and multi-purpose uses. However, like any other commodity, it is susceptible to ant attacks and diseases, including Cocoyam root rot disease (CRRD).

This has limited Nigeria’s cocoyam output to 3.2mn tonnes, 36% below its potential of 5mn tonnes. Investment in infrastructural facilities and increased government attention is needed to address the challenges and boost the government’s revenue from cocoyam exports.
