With a score of 51.06, Nigeria has remained a perennial under-performer in the Human Development Index league table. Efforts to improve labour productivity growth which is now at a rate of -0.4% have so far not achieved much. The vocational skill improvement programs of the government is now an area of emphasis of public policy.

As the gridlock in Apapa continues to increase the landed cost of goods, the switch to air freight as an alternative to sea freight becomes more compelling. That is why the AfDB’s commitment to increase its funding of aviation infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa is a welcome development.
