2024-New Year, Cherry News

It has been 4 days already this year and investors are anticipating a modest uptick in Nigeria’s economic prospects. The Federal Government and CBN predict disinflation in 2024 from a peak of 28.2% in 2023. The naira’s official rate is also expected to strengthen as the CBN reinstates its commitment to boost FX supply and defend the currency that shed 38.8% YTD in 2023.

Minimum wage review- N30,000 is not enough (money illusion or reality)

The icing on the cake is the proposed review of the monthly minimum wage (N30,000) announced during the president’s New Year’s speech. While this is expected to support consumers amid rising living costs, the implementation rate by companies is expected to be slow as operating costs have increased significantly in the past year. Nonetheless, with the PMI reading for December 2023 increasing by 9.79% to a six-month high, there are strong prospects for the wage increase taking effect more rapidly by H2’2024, still without a significant inflationary effect.

This edition of the Unity Bank Digest provides a comprehensive analysis of these economic trends and engaging lifestyle and entertainment stories for your reading pleasure.
